Dave McVay is the Committee Chair of Boy Scout Troop 1564’s annual tree recycling program. This afternoon, January 11, he was at Battle Point Park making a drop off of a trailer full of trees collected yesterday.

McVay said they had over 900 pickup reservations this year but many people had more than one tree ready for pickup, and he made a broad estimate of the amount of trees collected as being somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500.

A good portion of the trees had already been chipped. McVay said the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Parks and Recreation District would be using the wood chips on the Forest to Sky Trail.

In terms of money raised, he thought it was over $10,000. The Scouts ask for a donation of $10-$15 for pickup. Some of that collected money will go toward expenses, which are gas and the cost of promotional fliers. But the rest will go to Bainbridge Island Boy Scout Troop 1564 to pay for summer camp and other scout activities and expenses.

McVay said some of the recycling work had been done by Venturing Crew 262 of Bainbridge Island.

Every year, the crew finds ornaments still left on tree branches. They post photos of the found items so people can reclaim their lost treasures. You can find this year’s photo here.
